Kalmia Construction Hires CWS for Switchable Smart Film Project

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Kalmia construction of Beltsville, Md. has retained Commercial Window Shield for a switchable smart film window installation project for a College Park, Md. company.

Kalmia is under contract with IonQ, a leading quantum computing company, to renovate the building. As part of the project, IonQ has requested that switchable smart film be installed on its conference room glass and several glass office fronts.

The request relates to IonQ’s desire for on-demand privacy in its conference room and offices. Switchable smart film, which is growing in popularity in corporate offices across the country, allows privacy at the simple flip of a switch. Flip the switch on and the glass is clear with complete visibility. Flip if off and the glass turns dark for complete privacy.

The project will commence later in 2022. As it does on all its projects with general contractors involved in complete buildouts, Commercial Window Shield will work closely with other Kalmia contractors to coordinate schedules.

Although this is Commercial Window Shield’s first project with Kalmia, the company has a long history of working with some of the country’s leading general contractors, including DAVIS, Rand Construction, HITT, DPR Construction, Harvey-Cleary and Gilbane Building Co.

Commercial Window Shield’s major focus has been security and solar control window film installation. But in addition to switchable/smart films, the company also is expert in installing privacy/decorative, Radio Frequency [RF] and anti-bird strike films as well as polycarbonate protective glass systems.

Its clients have included the U.S. Capitol, FBI headquarters, the Pentagon, all House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings, Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch headquarters, the United Nations, the Willis [former Sears] Tower, O’Hare and Seattle international airports, and the Philadelphia and Denver mints.

Wilmington GC Retains CWS For U.S. Attorney Security Window Film Project

WILMINGTON, Del. – Commercial Window Shield has completed a last-minute security window film installation project for a Wilmington contractor with severe deadline in play.

The project involved installing 8-mil clear security window film on 111 windows with a wet glaze attachment system for Masonboro Construction and Development. Masonboro was in the process of completing a full build out of one floor in a downtown Wilmington building for the U.S. Attorney’s Office when the local contractor it hired to install the security window film backed out at the 11th hour. The issue for Masonboro was that the tenant was moving into the space in eight days and this was the last step in the renovation project.

Commercial Window Shield was made aware of Masonboro’s dilemma and contacted the construction company. They were quickly hired for the project and within 48 hours had installers on site. The installers worked completed the project to the satisfaction of Masonboro in 72 hours, beginning on a Saturday and ending on a Monday.

This achievement is nothing new for Commercial Window Shield, which for over 40 years has completed some of the country’s most significant fragment retention window film installation projects, often under tight deadlines and difficult conditions. In 2001, just days after 9/11, the company mobilized a workforce of more than 50 installers from around the country to install security film on the U.S. Capitol, all of the U.S. House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings, among others. The entire project was completed in 40 days, a stunning feat in the security window film industry.

Since then, the company has become an industry leader in the installation of solar control, decorative/privacy, smart, radio frequency [RF] shielding and anti-bird strike window films.

The excellent relationship Commercial Window Shield forged with Masonboro is no surprise. Over the years the company has developed a strong working relationship with some of the country’s leading general contractors. They include HITT, DAVIS, Rand Construction, DPR Construction, Harvey-Cleary and Gilbane Building Co.

Commercial Window Shield’s many prestigious window film installation projects have included FBI headquarters, the Pentagon, Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch headquarters, the United Nations, the Willis [former Sears] Tower, O’Hare and Seattle international airports, and the Philadelphia and Denver mints.

Commercial Window Shield: Window Film Installation Project in D.C.

WASHINGTON – Commercial Window Shield has completed the first phase of a window film installation project at a historic Washington, D.C. building and begun Phase 2.

DAVIS Construction retained the company earlier in the year for the window film projects at The Warner at 1299 Pennsylvania Ave., N.W.

DAVIS had been hired by CBRE Investment Management, The Warner’s owner, to renovate the building. A section of the building is the former Earle Theater, which was built in 1924.

cwsdefenselitewebsitepagepicno2.jpg

In the just-completed Phase 1, Commercial Window Shield installed privacy window film on the outside of the building’s three interior glass floors from inside the building’s atrium, where they had been fully visible.

Phase 2, which began last week, involves installing solar control, privacy and decorative window films on glass in the building’s front lobby and lobby entrance. The window films are a part of the design plan for the building entrance, which is part of an overall building renovation.

Additionally, DAVIS has asked Commercial Window Shield to install a blackout window film to block out the view of the ground floor amenities space from the outside sidewalk. Also, decorative film will be installed on all doors in the amenities space as well as on sidelight glass panes next to the glass.

As the project involves multiple contractors, Commercial Window Shield has been working closely with each of them to make sure all schedules are coordinated and work is completed on time without any issues. This cooperation will continue during the project’s Phase 2.

The Warner presently has two main tenants, a law firm and an international public relations company.

Commercial Window Shield and DAVIS have collaborated on a number of window film installation projects over the years. In July, 2021, DAVIS hired the company to install three types of window film at a complete building renovation at 1275 New Jersey Ave. SE., new corporate headquarters for Chemonics. Previously, DAVIS hired Commercial Window Film to install decorative window film at PBS headquarters in Arlington, Va. and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention building in Washington.

Commercial Window Shield is one of the country’s leading installers of all types of window films and have a particular strong history working with some of the country’s top general contractors.  Commercial Window Shield has also completed security, solar control, RF, smart, switchable and privacy window film projects for Harvey-Cleary, HITT, Gilbane Building Co., Rand Construction and D Watts Construction.

The company’s major focus in its nearly 40 years has been security and solar control window film installation.

Washington Convention Center Retains CWS For Construction Blackout Film Project

WASHINGTON – Continuing its long-term relationship with the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Commercial Window Shield recently completed a specialty film project on a tight deadline.

Rand Construction had started a project at the convention center and its work site was visible from outside the building through the windows. Convention center management, initially not aware this would be an issue, wanted the view blocked ASAP.

Working quickly on three-days’ notice over a weekend in poor weather, Commercial Window Shield employees installed removable construction blackout film that blocked the work area from outside view. Once the project is completed, the blackout film can easily be removed.

washingtonconventioncenter2a.jpg

Convention center officials were thrilled with Commercial Window Shield’s fast response and excellent work on the project.

“Thank you for meeting our ridiculous time frame for install,” said

Cathy Boles, assistant director of development for Events DC’s Facility Operations department.

Commercial Window Shield’s relationship with the convention center began in 2016, when they installed 42,000 sq. ft. of solar control film to correct heat, glare and fading issues with furniture, carpet and artwork at the convention center. The project also included installing 7,500 sq. ft. anti-bird strike film on the L Street bridge corridor, a regular fly-through zone for birds.

In 2019, Commercial Window Shield installed switchable smart window film on interior office and conference room windows. The film has an electrical component that is wired to a light switch. When the switch is off, the film remains clear allowing passersby to see inside. When the switch is on a decorative pattern emerges in the film, blocking views of the interior and turning the glass into a privacy wall.

That same year the company installed decorative privacy film in two new office areas for employees.

When these projects were completed, Commercial Window Shield was hired on a multi-year window films installation contract for the convention center on an as-needed basis. The construction blackout film project was the first project completed under the new agreement.

Convention centers are a growing segment of the window film installation market as building owners realize they need to secure windows in buildings that often contain a considerable amount of glass.  Energy efficiency is a reason convention centers are interested in the installation of solar control on their glass. A combined security solar control window film often is the best solution for building owners interested in security and energy efficiency.

Previously, Commercial Window Shield installed security window film on 2,500 windows at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, where hurricanes are a constant threat.

With more than 40 years of experience, Commercial Window Shield is among the nation’s leading security window film, solar reflective window film and privacy window film installers.  Among its many projects in the Washington area, the company has protected windows at the U.S. Capitol, FBI headquarters, Pentagon, and all House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings.

Nationwide, the company has completed projects at O’Hare International Airport, the Willis Tower [former Sears Tower], Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch headquarters, and the Denver and Philadelphia mints.
