D.C. Convention Center Hires CWS For Privacy Window Film Installation Project

WASHINGTON – Commercial Window Shield has completed yet another window film installation project at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

The project involved installing an opaque frosted privacy film on the lower section of glass in one of the center’s dining areas that overlooks the convention hall.  Around 95 windows were involved in the installation process. Additionally, Commercial Window Shield installed the same opaque frosted privacy film on a glass dividing wall that is part of the cafeteria.

In both installs, the opaque frosted window film provides 100 percent privacy.

The project was part of second multi-year window films installation contract with the convention center.  The original contract, signed in 2016, called for the company to be retained on an as needed basis to work on window film installation projects as they developed.

Over the past seven years, the company has completed a variety of projects for the convention center involving various types of window film.

In 2016, Commercial Window Shield installed 42,000 sq. ft. of solar control film to correct heat, glare and fading issues with furniture, carpet and artwork at the convention center. The project also included installing 7,500 sq. ft. anti-bird strike film on the L Street bridge corridor, a regular fly-through zone for birds.

In 2019, Commercial Window Shield installed switchable smart window film on interior office and conference room windows. The film has an electrical component that is wired to a light switch. When the switch is on, the film remains clear allowing passersby to see inside. When the switch is off a decorative pattern emerges in the film, blocking views of the interior and turning the glass into a privacy wall.

That same year the company installed decorative privacy film in two new office areas for employees.

More recently, Commercial Window Shield installed permanent blackout film on a number of windows behind information signs located inside the convention center’s south and north buildings. The issue was that the back of the signs was visible from outside the building where there are two entranceways, one to each building, beneath the L Street corridor. The corridor connects the convention center’s south and north buildings. After the film was installed this summer, it blocked the unsightly view of the signs’ back panels by turning the glass into a wall making the glass 100% opaque.

Convention centers are a growing segment of the window film installation market as building owners realize they need to secure windows in buildings that often contain a considerable amount of glass.  Energy efficiency is a reason convention centers are interested in the installation of solar control on their glass. A combined security/solar control window film often is the best solution for building owners interested in security and energy efficiency.

Previously, the company installed security window film on 2,500 windows at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, where hurricanes are a constant threat.

With nearly 40 years of experience, Commercial Window Shield is among the nation’s leading security window film, solar reflective window film and privacy window film installers.  Among its many projects in the Washington area, the company has protected windows at the U.S. Capitol, FBI headquarters, Pentagon, and all House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings. Nationwide, the company has completed projects at O’Hare International Airport, the Willis Tower [former Sears Tower], Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch headquarters, and the Denver and Philadelphia.

Commercial Window Shield: Smart Film Installation Project

WASHINGTON — One of the world’s largest commercial service real estate companies has hired Commercial Window Shield for a switchable smart film installation project in the nation’s capital for the U.S. Department of Justice.

Cushman & Wakefield is directing the project for DOJ at the historic Bond Building at 1400 New York Ave. NW. Commercial Window Shield will be installing switchable smart film on three large conference rooms and three DOJ team rooms.

Smart film, also known as switchable film, is installed on interior glass and has an electrical component that is wired to a light switch. When the switch is on, the film remains clear allowing passersby to see inside. When the switch is off the film becomes opaque, blocking views of the interior and turning the glass into a privacy wall.

DOJ officials had been looking at a couple of options for their switchable smart film installation and contacted Commercial Window Shield, which has considerable experience as smart film installers. For the DOJ project, Commercial Window Shield recommended a smart film it had installed last year for Harvey-Cleary, one of the country’s leading general contractors. That project involved installing smart film in a Tysons Corner building occupied by Maximus, a 34,000-employee company that provides administrative and other services to federal government programs. DOJ officials visited Maximus offices and were impressed with the switchable smart film installed by Commercial Window Shield.

The DOJ project, which will begin later this year, is the second window film installation project involving Cushman & Wakefield. Last year, Commercial Window Shield installed solar control window film on a building in which the U.S. Department of Agriculture is the sole tenant. Cushman & Wakefield manages the property and hired Commercial Window Shield for the project.

For more than 40 years, Commercial Window Shield has been one of the country’s leading installers of window films. In addition to solar control and switchable smart film, the company is expert in security, radio frequency [RF], privacy/decorative and anti-bird strike window film installation.

Its projects over the years have included the U.S. Capitol, FBI headquarters, the Pentagon, all House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings, Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch headquarters, the United Nations, the Willis [former Sears] Tower, O’Hare and Seattle international airports, and the Philadelphia and Denver mint

CWS Credited with Saving Birds Via Window Film Installation Project at DC Convention Center

WASHINGTON – A local conservation group has lauded the effort of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center and its contractor Commercial Window Shield for saving the lives of thousands of birds by installing anti-bird strike window film on a section of its building.

Anne Lewis, president of City Wildlife, said that since the installation of the film by Commercial Window Shield in 2016, there has been an 85 percent reduction in building bird strikes.

The company installed 7,500 sq. ft. of anti-bird strike film on the L Street glass bridge corridor, a regular fly-through zone for birds. The glass corridor connects the convention center with a building next door.

Lewis, an architect, said Lights Out DC, a program administered by City Wildlife, began monitoring the L Street corridor situation in 2010 after reports of a high incidence of bird deaths surfaced. Convention center administrators were alerted about the problem. They took the initiative to add to anti-bird strike film to a solar control window film installation project they hired Commercial Window Shield to complete.

The issue with birds and office building glass involves location, light conditions, and time of day. Building glass and windows can appear highly reflective or completely transparent. By appearing similar to open sky, trees, and vegetation, it causes birds to mistake the space as a safe place to fly.

The success of the convention center project helped inspire Lights Out DC to persuade the Council of the District of Columbia to consider legislation in which newly constructed buildings would take measures to avoid birds crashing into their windows. The legislation passed the initial vote in early December. If it passes a second vote it will be up the city’s mayor to approve the legislation.

The Lights Out DC initiative is patterned after highly successful lights-out programs in Chicago, Toronto, Boston, New York City and Baltimore. As the number of birds migrating north every year appears to have increased, along with a proliferation of new office buildings in cities in the path of flyways, the number of birds crashing into buildings and dying also has increased.

The most visible boost to bird safety window film as a deterrent to bird deaths occurred in December, 2019, when New York City Council passed legislation requiring bird friendly glass in buildings throughout the city. The bird safety film installed by Commercial Window Shield is a cheaper and effective alternative to installing bird friendly glass.

Commercial Window Shield is one of the country’s leading installers of all types of window films including security, solar control, privacy/decorative, radio frequency [RF] and switchable smart.

The company’s major focus in its nearly 40 years has been security and solar control window film installation. Its clients have included the U.S. Capitol, FBI headquarters, the Pentagon, O’Hare International Airport, all House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings, Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch headquarters, the United Nations, the Willis [former Sears] Tower, and the Philadelphia and Denver mints.
